Position Overview

The Director of Healthcare Supply Chain is responsible for overseeing the procurement, inventory management, and distribution of medical supplies and equipment within a healthcare organization. This role involves developing and implementing supply chain strategies, managing vendor relationships, and optimizing processes to ensure cost-effectiveness, operational efficiency, and patient care. The director also leads a team of supply chain professionals, providing guidance and support to achieve departmental goals.

This role encompasses end-to-end supply chain functions, including pharmaceutical sourcing, purchasing, receiving, inventory management, distribution/coordination, DSCSA compliance, vendor selection and negotiation, contract management, and data-driven supply chain analytics. The Director is accountable for driving operational excellence, ensuring regulatory compliance, and enabling cost-effective strategies to manage the company’s rapidly growing annual pharmaceutical and medical supply spend of over $200 million.

A key focus of the role is to optimize inventory performance and generate sustainable cost savings while supporting high service levels across all infusion centers, pharmacies, and the centralized fulfillment center. The Director also plays a critical role in building collaborative relationships with internal and external stakeholders to foster a culture of innovation, accountability, and service-oriented supply chain transformation.

Key Responsibilities

The Director of Supply Chain is responsible for designing, executing, and continuously refining scalable and compliant supply chain solutions that support the clinical operations, financial goals, and rapid growth trajectory that includes the following key areas of focus:

1. Regulatory & Licensing Compliance

  • Secure and maintain a Designated Representative license to oversee the company’s pharmaceutical wholesale and 3PL operations in accordance with state and federal regulations.
  • Ensure full compliance with the Drug Supply Chain Security Act (DSCSA) by thoroughly vetting, onboarding authorized trading partners, and setting up compliant medication order transmission protocols.

2. Cost Optimization & Procurement Strategy

  • Reduce quarter-over-quarter average weighted costs for high-spend pharmaceuticals through strategic sourcing, volume leverage, and cost containment initiatives.
  • Lead robust vendor evaluation, contract negotiation, and RFP processes to identify and maintain strategic partnerships that enhance clinic and pharmacy operations.

3. Inventory Management & Optimization

  • Manage pharmaceutical and supply inventory across the company’s fulfillment center, infusion centers, and pharmacies to prevent under- or over-stocking.
  • Implement accurate demand forecasting using the inventory management system and data from EMRs to ensure timely and sufficient supply to meet patient care needs.
  • Establish real-time inventory visibility and reconciliation practices to minimize discrepancies between system and actual on-hand inventory.

4. Performance Monitoring & Continuous Improvement

  • Develop and maintain key performance indicators (KPIs) and operational dashboards to track and improve fill rates, service levels, lead times, inventory turnover, and Days of Inventory on Hand (DOH).
  • Identify gaps in inventory processes and lead cross-functional initiatives to drive operational excellence.

5. Strategic Programs & Cross-Functional Collaboration

  • Manage critical clinic support programs, including IV pump management, Emergency Kit Exchange, and specific medication protocols.
  • Actively contributes to the company’s growth and quality improvement initiatives by participating in multidisciplinary committees and strategic planning efforts.

The Position will include daily oversight of the following:

  • Lead inventory management improvements by establishing regular cycle counts, KPIs, and recurring reports to track accuracy, inventory optimization, and working capital performance.
  • Ensure high service levels by maintaining availability and accountability of pharmaceuticals and medical supplies across all infusion centers and pharmacies.
  • Build and maintain strategic partnerships with pharmaceutical wholesalers, distributors, manufacturers, and GPOs to drive cost-effective, value-added solutions for AleraCare.
  • Collaborate with senior leadership to define, implement, and monitor an annual inventory management plan that achieves targeted investment and performance goals.
  • Lead sourcing strategies (RFQs, RFPs) to secure lowest net pricing on pharmaceuticals through discounts, rebates, and service fees.
  • Establish and track supply chain KPIs for infusion centers and pharmacies to ensure competitive purchasing performance.
  • Ensure compliance with policies and procedures related to the receipt, storage, transport, and distribution of pharmaceuticals, including inventory accuracy, loss prevention, and FIFO practices.
  • Oversee secure and compliant distribution practices from suppliers to the company’s central fulfillment centers, infusion centers, and pharmacies.
  • Manage documentation and tracking of Serial-level transactions for all pharmaceuticals.
  • Oversee all pharmaceutical inventory transactions, including receipt, distribution, and other dispositions.
  • Conduct monthly physical inventory counts across 3PL, infusion centers, pharmacies, and wholesale operations.
  • Evaluate current and prospective agreements to identify cost-saving opportunities across pharmaceuticals, medical supplies, and indirect spending (e.g., small parcel freight).
  • Manage the research, vetting, and onboarding of new pharmaceutical and medical supply vendors.
  • Monitor and ensure compliance with all executed supply chain agreements and partner obligations.

Required Qualifications or Experience:

  1. Have at least 3 years of full -time employment history with a pharmacy or a wholesaler in a capacity related to the dispensing and distribution of and the record keeping related to prescription drugs.
  2. Minimum of 1 year of paid work experience in a licensed pharmacy, or with a drug wholesaler, drug distributor, or drug manufacturer, in the past three years, related to the distribution or dispensing of dangerous drugs or dangerous devices or meet all of the prerequisites to take the examination required for licensure as a CA pharmacist.
  3. Previous or current employment by a full-service wholesale permittee in a managerial level position, actively involved in the daily operation of a wholesale distribution of prescription only drugs, and physically present at a full-service wholesale facility during regular business hours unless absence of the DR is authorized.

Preferred Qualifications

  1. 5+ years of leadership experience in supply chain management and purchasing within healthcare services.
  2. BA/BS in Business Administration, Supply Chain, or related field.
  3. Managing supply chain operations across multiple pharmacies and infusion centers.
  4. Experience across multiple healthcare trade classes, including Specialty Pharmacy, Home Infusion, and Physician/Clinic settings.
  5. Proficient with pharmacy and infusion center systems for purchasing and inventory such as Caretend, Fishbowl, and other market leading platforms. Previous experience with leading pharmaceutical wholesalers including McKesson, Curascripts, Cencora, and Cardinal Health.
  6. Current human resources and/or compensation credentials or certification preferred.
